edition). Read Ch. 8, “The Person and Work of Jesus Christ.”
2. Gregory
Anderson Love, Love,
Violence and the Cross: How the Nonviolent God Saves Us through the
Cross of Christ.
Read the whole book.
Both
of these books are available through Amazon as Kindle editions. Also
available as new, or as used.
Assignments:
For
this section of the coursework, you will write three short papers,
each one 4 pages (double spaced). The papers are due Midnight
on Sunday,
Oct. 23.
Paper
#1: The Penal Substitutionary Theory of Atonement.
Read Ch. 1 of my book, Love,
Violence and the Cross.
In the first two pages, summarize what is wrong with the human
condition, and how Jesus saves us from it. In the final two pages,
give your analysis of that view: What are its strengths? What are
its weaknesses? [Give four points of analysis, a full paragraph for
each point.]
Paper
#2: The Alternative to Penal Substitution by its Sharp Critics.
For this paper, write a paper similar to the first paper, on either
Ch. 4 or Ch. 5 of my book. In the first two pages, summarize what is
wrong with the human condition, and how Jesus saves us from it. In
the final two pages, give your analysis of that view: What are its
strengths? What are its weaknesses? [Give four points of analysis,
a full paragraph for each point.]
Paper
#3: Reconstructions of Traditional Views of Atonement.
For this final paper, write a paper similar to the first and second
papers, on one of the chapters between Chs. 7-11. In the first two
pages, summarize what is wrong with the human condition, and how
Jesus saves us from it. In the final two pages, give your analysis
of that view: What are its strengths? What are its weaknesses?
[Give four points of analysis, a full paragraph for each point.]
