Course Description:

This course will be a reading of Wisdom Literature in the Old Testament. Sung Kim will help the students read from the prospective of those who are steeped in Wisdom Literature as in Asian and Buddhist traditions and cultures.

Before class students will read Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Job. With the following questions in mind

• Are justice and happiness congruent? Or, are you just to live a happy life?
• What do the texts say about the suffering of the just?

Students are also to develop one question that they have of the readings.

Required Texts:

The Bible – NRSV as well as other translations

Course Requirements:

1. Attendance at both class sessions.
2. Read the text before class bring insights from the questions and their own question to class.
3. There will be on short writing assignment that will be developed during the class that will be due in the next couple of weeks.

Course Description:

This course introduces participants to the content of the Old Testament and to the task of interpreting the Old Testament for contemporary Christian congregations. Questions of the Old Testament’s abiding authority for the church are addressed, and attention is given to the way its major literary forms (narrative, law, prophecy, psalm, wisdom saying) uniquely bear witness to the gospel of God.

Course Requirements:

1. Attendance at both class sessions.
2. Completion of all required readings.
3. A final assignment enumerating the 10 most important insights you gained from the readings and class presentations. Insights should be stated in your own words but may include quotes from books or lectures as appropriate (1-2 pp). On a separate sheet, list a minimum of 5 questions that remain for you about the Old Testament or the task of engaging or interpreting Old Testament texts for the life of the church. Send final assignment as an attachment to the instructor’s email address above. DUE: July 14, 2017

In order to receive a passing grade for the class, ALL work must be completed and turned in no later than July 28, 2017.

Pre-Course Assignment:

Prior to the first class session, please read the two required texts (Anderson and Davis) and come prepared to discuss what you consider to be the problems and possibilities of teaching and preaching the Old Testament in your current congregation.

Pre-Course Assignment

Read the Garcia article and the Confessions of 1967 and Belhar in the Book of Confessions before class. As you read these texts, record what are – for you – 10 key insights that illumine, deepen, or challenge your knowledge and understanding of how the congregation that you are a member of can best embody the PCUSA core identity of being “Reformed but always Reforming” in the post 2016 presidential election environment in Church and society in the United States. In addition, list 5 questions that remain for you – for further study or to be answered in class. This assignment will be collected on Friday evening. It will shape the instruction for the Saturday class and the nature of your final assignment.

Dr. Ruth works with judicatories and congregations to establish safe relationships and faith communities, including prevention of child abuse, domestic violence, elder abuse, sexual harassment, professional misconduct and other abuses of power.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

1) To increase awareness of the need for healthy and appropriate boundaries in the

clergy/congregant or teacher/student relationship

2) Review the Sexual Misconduct Policy of the Presbytery of San Francisco

2) To illustrate the impact of appropriate vs. inappropriate boundaries in promoting effective ministry.

3) To provide clergy and spiritual teachers with guidelines and suggestions for developing appropriate boundaries and necessary self-care strategies

Course Description:

This course will increase the students’ intercultural competency for leadership in a multicultural world.

Topics to explore includes:

• What is culture, and why are there cultural differences?
• Cultural differences and their impacts on our congregational leadership
• Power dynamics in multicultural environments
• Theological reflection on leadership in a multicultural diverse context
• Skill, models and processes for building inclusive community
• Developing a spirituality for leadership in a diverse, changing world

3. Final Project:

1. Using the skills and models from this course, create a project involving at least 8 people from diverse backgrounds in the context of your own ministry.
2. The project needs to have the following elements:
   1. At least 3-5 hours of contact with the group.
   2. A carefully designed process using the skills and tools learned in the course.
   3. Evaluation – written and verbal from participants.
3. Write a report and reflection:
   1. Goals and objectives of the project
   2. Detailed design outline of the session(s)
   3. Include all handouts materials used for the session(s)
   4. Summary of written evaluations
   5. A reflection on your experience (about 10 pages) as a leader that demonstrate incorporation of learning from class and reading.

Pre-Course Assignment: Read The Wolf Shall Dwell with the Lamb. Pay attention to multicultural gatherings between now and March 17. Keep a journal of your reflections on the dynamics and concerns that you observed in multicultural gathering.

February 24-25  we welcome Daniel Kirk to teach our New Testament overview class for the CLP/CRE program. 

Dr. Daniel Kirk Ph.D., Duke University Daniel has taught in a variety of institutions for over 10 years on the big story of the Bible and how it intersects with life, faith, and culture. He hopes his teaching and writing will help Christians express their faith in ways that lead to the greater flourishing of the world. Dr. Kirk is presently Pastoral Director at Newbigin House in San Francisco.
